About Ilha do Ferro, Alagoas.

When we decide to visit a new country, usually we choose the mainstream route — hotspots that appear repeatedly in every Google search. And there are many reasons why these places are headliners for visitors, but umacanoa invites you to dig a little deeper into Brazil’s cultural patrimony, and discover some invaluable regional manifestations that, sometimes, stay out of big travel blogs’ sight.

That’s the case of Ilha do Ferro, in Alagoas, home of a strong popular culture marked by wood carved art. Its natives do not bump into visitors very often, but are frequently visited by artists and art enthusiasts that travel directly to see their work — many times exposed right there, at the sidewalks.

Although “Ilha” means “Island” in Portuguese, the village is far away from the sea, but bathed by the São Francisco River - one of the 5 largest rivers in Brazil - so, water is still part of the landscape and a good call for refreshing after a walk.
One of our favorite spots in town is Ateliê Boca do Vento, serving delicious meals but only upon request in advance — exactly the kind of personal touch we love in a world full of pre-recorded messages and booking apps.

Seems great enough? That's because you haven't  yet seen the city’s marvelous architecture and colorful houses. Its picturesque and laidback atmosphere make you want to stay and have the rare feeling of time going by.
